Fires in and around the northern Alberta city of Fort McMurray has Mennonite Disaster Service Alberta Unit and Region V members on standby with other non-government agencies ready to help when called upon.
Devastating fires have consumed the region and are forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Alberta history, according to news reports.
“It is a continuing situation,” Glen Kauffman, MDS Alberta Unit chair said, May 4, 2016. “Today might be worse than yesterday.”
According to Kauffman, some 60,000 people have been evacuated from Fort McMurray with people in camps north and south of the city.
“It is too early to say how and when we can best respond,” Kauffman said. “We will continue to monitor the situation.”
Kauffman said that at this point in time MDS is accepting financial donations for responding to the fires, but is unable to accept material donations, such as clothing and other goods.
